Sri Lanka a country overlooked
From beaches to safaris an abundance of culture and amazing food. It’s a super Honeymoon destination for couples who want a bit of adventure.
But is it safe I hear you ask? Sri Lanka has been ranked no 1 as “The best places for solo female travel in 2024” by Timeout.com which also makes it a really safe Honeymoon destination too.
Explore Columbo, visit the cultural centre and Sigiriya. Add in the tea plantations and Ella and when your finished exploring this incredible island hit the beaches in the South or visit the Maldives or even Dubai on the way home.
The beaches in the south are suitable for surfing and can be a little rough for swimming but this for me added to the dramatic seascape.
My advice would be enjoy the hotel pools and at lunch time or sunset with beer/cocktail in hand watching the waves roll in. It was bliss. The fortified city of Galle can also be visited from here.
Yala national park should be considered it is a whopping 100,000 hectares of forest and grassland which boarders the Indian Ocean which makes it a very unique spot.
The scenery is breath-taking and different to any African safari so well worth a visit. Plan to see some of its 350 elephants. You can also see water buffalo, crocodiles, warthogs, spotted deer and with the highest Leopard density in the world you might get lucky and spot one. It’s not a given but the odds are in your favour.
The sloth bear also resides here but are known to be even more elusive than the leopard.
Note: the regulations on the number of safari jeeps to animal ratio is not tightly controlled here like it is in Africa so it’s just something to be aware of. Sri Lanka are looking at ways to improve this.
It’s a fabulous place to see some of Sri Lanka’s rural landscapes, wetlands and native animals and I would recommend it and yes, I’d visit again.
Sri Lanka is a very large country and getting from place to place does take time. So, allow yourself an extra day here and there so you can relax and don’t feel like you are on the go for the whole trip. There so much diversity in Sri Lanka you could easily spent 2-2 1/2 weeks here no problem at all.
Did you know you could hot air balloon over Sigiriya rock! Or cycle through paddy fields or surf on the south coast or even go whale watching in Marissa from Nov to April. It’s such a diverse destination with something for every couple.
There’s so much to see, I’ll definitely be back sooner rather than later to explore again. It’s now too of the bucket list again.
