Sri Lanka Take Two

Sri Lanka Take Two:

With Volleyball as its national sport and the squirrel as its national animal, Sri Lanka was not fitting into my preconceived ideas from the get-go, which made it even more intriguing. With 1.2 million Tuk Tuks and Approx 6,000 wild elephants there’s some incredible sights waiting for you in Sri Lanka. It’s perfect for a Honeymoon with many high-end properties to treat yourself to and many adventure to experience.

See wild elephants walking the roads as you drive from place to place. Visit the elephants in one of the many national parks. Take in the Buddhist temples or Hindu temples or churches. See the tea plantation in breath taking mountain landscapes. Take a steam train to nine arch bridge. Or go on safari to try spot a leopard or if you are really lucky a sloth bear and when you’ve explored all you can explore with your own private driver/guide hit the white sandy beaches to chill out and surf and eat more of the amazing Sri Lankan food. Pineapple curry is a highly recommended place to start.

My highlights where Hurulu eco park which has approx 1000 wild roaming elephants. It’s an incredible day out spotting the elephants. Afternoon safaris are the order of the day as the elephants are more likely to be seen in higher number as they move for water at this time. The tea plantations and tea trails are high in the mountains and totally unique. Tea factories and tea pickers who are predominantly woman can be seen picking tea daily. The scenery is amazing and a must do. The Calypso train running over the nine arch bridge was fantastic. You can sit outside and watch the rural communities fly by and the scenery is gorgeous. The train takes one hour, one way and stops on the nine arch bridge itself. You are allowed to disembark the train for 10 minutes to take all your photos and then back on the train to continue your journey. I totally loved it. Yala National Park has the largest congregation of leopards in the world with at approx 350 leopards in the park. A super opportunity if you want to try and spot a leopard. Just keep in mid it is not guaranteed as they are after all wild animals.

I also loved the palm lined beaches on the south of the island. White sandy long beaches. Great surfing can be found along this coast too. Whale watching in Mirissa best done from Nov-Apr. Mirissa, Tangella and Galle are all popular spots to stay for a while.
