Explora - the only way to cruise...

Cruises seem to be like buses for me in 2024. You never see them, then two come along in 2 months!

Explora is the new ultra luxury division launched by MSC. My vessel of choice was Explora I, launched just last year, with their most recent addition, Explora II only in operation since SEP24.

My short trip was an exploratory 4 night journey from Venice, south through the Adriatic, via Croatia & Montenegro to Athens.

At first glance, this will look like any large multi-tiered passenger cruise ship, but once onboard the differences start appearing. Most of the ‘regular’ cruise lines have ships that will easily accommodate over 4000 souls (the largest in operation with RCCL currently in 2024 with 5610 guests, plus staff!) – By comparison, this Explora vessel has a maximum capacity of 922. I would stress maximum, as building brand loyalty into this Premium Luxury sector is factored in as a slow burn for the company.

A stress (and crowd) free check in had our bags whipped away in moments and directions given to our Ocean Terrace Suite. Laughably, this is their ‘entry level’ and at 35 sq/m, it’s easily twice the size of most other rooms on other brands. No-one on Explora is forced to accept an inward facing ‘Inside’ cabin and suites multiply in size, right up to the monstrous Owner’s Suite at 280 sq/m (including a 125 sq/m full wraparound terrace with jacuzzi, dinner seating for 6 and other essential inclusions!)

Our early afternoon departure was almost imperceptible with the lack of noise, vibration and any drama whatsoever. Our first evening was one of exploration, noting the 6 restaurants, 4 swimming pools, multiple infinity whirlpools/hot tubs, fully equipped gym and even a guest laundry on each deck. A notable point here is that advanced Starlink wi-fi (3 devices per person) all drinks & guest gratuities are included on your fare paid - all extra on every other cruise line unless ‘included’ on a specific package.

The stop on our first morning was Split (Croatia) and it becomes apparent of the sway that the MSC group have with the closest berth to town, which is easily walkable in 10-15 mins. It’s worth noting that Explora do not include off-ship excursions in their rates, the feeling being that as not everyone wants to alight at each stop, to charge for the service would be inappropriate. Excursions are on offer though with local guides, however we found self-guided exploration very easy with only the most cursory research. #1 on the list of attractions here is the impressive Diocletian’s Palace, with it’s origins in the third century AD - A highlight of here was a local high school choir rehearsing among the recesses of the stone caverns – Unforgettable.

Onward overnight to Montenegro and a morning deck walk here was rewarded with stunning sunrise views as we traversed through the Bay of Kotor. Docking in Kotor itself, we’re again pulling rank, securing the only cruise ship space in port. Another cruise line further down the pecking order, has to anchor a half mile out in the bay, with 6 tender boats in operation constantly throughout the day, ferrying passengers on & off the ship. Along with the glorious Old Town, a highlight here is the stunningly picturesque vantage point from Kotor Fort. The 1000 ft of climbing to get there was a enjoyable (if energetic) feat.

Open water cruising for 36 hours enroute to Greece to finish, ample time to experience any missed restaurants or swimming pools. By now, it’s clear to all on board that Explora has a wonderful informal feel, whilst still ticking all the boxes for Premium Luxury cruising

Our final docking morning in Piraeus port, Athens brought home the category of ship we’re on again. With neighbouring berths parking areas full with passenger coaches, our Explora dock had a neat line of private transfer vehicles & taxis. Disembarkation was as brisk as expected, with last departure off the ship for 0930. Tight time constraints meant no stop in Athens and the early afternoon flight departure was perfectly timed to arrive home that same afternoon.
