In the capital, Port Louis, you will find French colonial architecture, the 19th century Champ de Mars horse-racing track, the blue penny museum, a huge central market, Eureka plantation house and 18th century botanical gardens. The village of Grand Baie offers many restaurants, lively nightlife, shopping, and a colourful Hindu temple.

We took a catamaran trip from the North coast and enjoyed swimming offshore. Whilst scuba-diving from the south coast, I experienced my first shark encounter! Time stood still as I tried to figure out how far away it was and how large it was. A day I will never forget.

The food in Mauritius is influenced by a diverse mix of Indian, Chinese, African and European cultures, creating a melting-pot of flavours. Try dholl-puri (an Indian style flat-bread), Gateaux piment (chilli fritters) or boulettes (dumplings).
