Sun Princess

I spent the first week of my recent annual leave onboard Princess Cruises newly launched ship – Sun Princess. Sailing out of Athens, the itinerary included ports of call in Montenegro, Corfu, Sicily & Naples

Sun Princess is different to any ship I have cruised on previously. The main unique features include:

• The Piazza – spanning over three floors in the heart of the ship wrapped in a sphere of glass allowing the sunlight of the Mediterranean to flood in. You will find entertainment throughout the day & night as well as dining venues and the popular International Café

• The Dome – A glass enclosed theatre style dome with plush loungers. A quiet indoor sanctuary during the day and an entertainment venue at night

• Princess Medallion – When you cruise with Princess cruises, rather than a keycard for your cabin, you get a €2 size coin that you wear around your neck or wrist. Your cabin door recognises as you walk towards it and automatically unlocks. You can order food through the Princess App anywhere on the ship and the crew will locate you to deliver it to you and you can easily locate other passengers you are travelling with.

The food and service onboard are excellent and there are several entertainment venues including the beautiful Princess Arena and of course O’Malley’s Irish Pub (great entertainment & craic every night!)

One of the unique experiences Sun Princess offers is Spellbound – a partnership with the Magic Castle in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The event has a cost of $149 per person which includes an exclusive meal with all guests booked to attend. You are then escorted to a private lounge, served incredible cocktails, and entertained at the bar by magicians before being brought into a separate room where a world class magician puts on a half hour show. You can take videos and photos up until the time the show begins, then it is not allowed so the surprise is not spoiled for other guests. As you enter the lounge, the ‘ghost’ of Isabella plays the piano. You can ask her to play any tune, she will stop and begin playing your requested song. This is a really fun, interactive evening that really does add some magic to the holiday.

One of Princess Cruises popular traditions is Movies under the Stars. Each evening the loungers around the pool will be arranged to welcome guests to watch a blockbuster movie at night with blankets and popcorn provided. There was also a movie each afternoon at 3pm shown at the pool. After boarding from spending a few hours in Corfu, it seemed like the whole ship sat together to watch Maverick on the giant screen.

As part of our Princess Premier package, we had two speciality meals included. We opted for the Sabatini’s Italian Restaurant & Umai Teppanyaki. Both meals and the service in both restaurants was exceptional. The Teppanyaki, in particular, was the best quality food I’ve had for this type of meal.

Sun princess has a total of 5 pools and hot tubs onboard. My favourite was the infinity pool in the Wake View Terrace which is right at the back of the ship. Such a beautiful view as you sail away and the terrace has everything you need – a pool, hot tubs, bar, and plenty of lounges.

For families looking to cruise, the top deck is where you will find Park 19. This wasn’t opened when we sailed but once it is, it is full of family activities including a Roll glider and Splash Zone. A 200m jogging track wraps around this area of the ship.

Sun Princess continues to sail in the Med until September before moving to the Caribbean. Her sister ship Star Princess will join the fleet in 2025.

I have a highlight saved on my Instagram page of all the stories I posted during my cruise including each of the ports of call. Feel free to check it out!
